FORT WORTH, Texas -- Gone are the days of painful vein stripping. A new treatment uses laser technology to treat varicose veins.

"It represents a completely new treatment for a very old problem," Dr. Mark McQuaid said.

The Plano vascular surgeon uses the CoolTouch laser and sees improvement, he said, in just one treatment.

"You really see results immediately. Many patients report systematic change the next day. They are able to walk out of the office and the symptoms that they were experiencing previously oftentimes are diminished the very next day," he said.

Using ultrasound technology, McQuaid targets troubled veins. Then he feeds laser fiber from the CoolTouch CTEV laser into the veins. Gentle laser energy closes the vein by shrinking the tissue. The blood that was circulating through the varicose vein is rerouted to other healthy veins, and the closed off vein is simply absorbed into the body.

McQuaid covers the treated areas with protective hose and bandages that patients can remove a few hours later.

After suffering from the unsightly and painful varicose veins, Julie O'Reilly decided to try the procedure.

"By the end of the day, I'm feeling like I can't go anymore. It feels like I've walked 10, 15 miles. My legs are just heavy," she said.

She underwent the treatment in one hour.

"It was just so fast, too. I cannot believe it. I just wish I had been in here a year ago."

The CoolTouch laser treatment starts at $2,000 per leg.
